Why I choose to call myself a maverick..? I don't know for sure. Maybe it is the streak of unpredictableness in my nature, a shade of eccentricity, and above all the very soul of my late father alive in me.. in my everyday life.. in the breath which I bre
The TV news channels today morning were all about the American elections. In far off India where I live, it is being discussed in almost all the major news channels. To the largest democracy in the world, the elections in America is keenly followed. Being the world's most powerful nation, America has a hegemonic interest in India. To us, in India and the rest of the world it is inconsequential whether Bush wins the election or John Kerry is the new president of America. The interest is more on whether there would be any change in foreign policy. For us in India the major concern is not what Bush (he is certain to continue for a second term, as the early trends so far indicate) pursues in his Middle East policy but what he is going to do about the pan-islamist forces operating out of Pakistan, a close ally of America in its so called ‘war on terrorism’. Now that Bin Laden has surfaced with new threats to America, do we in India perceive a change in the policies of Bush towards Pakistan. It is also a known fact that Osama Bin Laden is operating somewhere from Pakistan and that Pakistan has been unable to exterminate him with all the might of American military hardware, logistics and intelligence network, for reasons which is best known to the Pakistanis. Again it is known that Pakistan is the birth place of these forces – indoctrinated in hatred for the west, churned out in hundreds from the numerous madrasas. President Parvez Musharaf’s show of force against this forces has just been an eye wash for the larger western world, while it has not stopped churning out mercenaries spreading terror in many states of India and also across South Asia. It would therefore of interest what would be the policy of Mr. Bush towards Pakistan and India and his ‘war on terrorism’. Here one may also just wonder ‘whether Bin Laden has helped Bush gain a slender edge over John Kerry and a go at the presidentship for the second term?’
